What Makes a Character Great?

I’ve been thinking about characters lately, mostly about how to make them more compelling. So I asked: Who are my favorite fictional police detectives? I came up with Lucas Davenport (John Sanford’s Prey series) and April Woo (Leslie Glass). I thought I might find commonalities that attract me as a reader. Instead, I discovered that they are very different.

Davenport seems to have no family, no parents or siblings that he is connected to in any way. April Woo has parents who are very present in her life. Davenport has a lot of money and doesn’t need to work. Woo has money problems (mostly because of her parents). Davenport knows how to play the political game to get what he wants out of the department. Woo is incapable of playing politics and lacks social skills in general.

So why do I like both these characters? Perhaps because they are both independent and unconcerned with what others think of them. They are also very good at their jobs. But I’m not satisfied yet, and I’m still thinking about this. So who are your favorite characters and why do you like them so much?

My two favorites are Jean Valjean (Les Miz) and Edmund Dantes (Count of Monte Cristo), because they both went thru such stunning transformations. They both could have remained bitter, raging men, but they didn't. Valjean sought God's grace, a perfect balance against Javert's feeling that he deserved it and the Thenardiers' belief they didn't need it. Dantes turned his rage into revenge, but ultimately realized that what he needed to show was mercy in order to save himself.

My favorite character of all times is Scarlett O'Hara because she is so complex. Selfish, yes, but willing to protect her family and do what it takes to survive. I don't think I'd like her if I met her, but I do admire the heck out of her.

My favorite character of all time is Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain's mouthpiece of philosophy, a voice of reason and sanity in an insane world.

I love Jean Valjean for the same reason as Gayle Carline. The incredible transformation he experiences keeps me reading. He's a completely humble hero, which I find hugely satisfying. Let the minor characters fall into temptation, my MC's gonna rock the morality scale. I also love Howl from Howl's Moving Castle. Which is funny, because he doesn't rock the morality scale at all. He could never stand on his own though - he's only so wonderful because of the way it forces the other characters to interact with him.
